In a significant turn of events in Ghanaian politics, John Boadu has been elected as the National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), while Justin Frimpong Kodua retained his position as General Secretary. This new leadership structure comes after Boadu's defeat by Kodua in the 2022 NPP national executive elections, where Kodua secured 2,837 votes against Boadu's 2,524.

Boadu's political career spans over three decades, with experience in various party administrative roles, including Polling Station Chairman, Constituency Secretary, and Regional Research and Elections Officer. He occupied several positions at the party headquarters, including National Finance Officer, National Youth Treasurer, National Youth Organiser, Deputy National Communications Director, and National Organiser. In 2015, he served as Acting General Secretary and was elected substantive General Secretary in 2018.

The 2022 contest was significant, as Boadu had built his campaign around his experience as a tested party administrator. However, Kodua presented delegates with an alternative, resulting in a close election that demonstrated Boadu's defeat was not a complete political disappearance. The 313-vote margin separated the incumbent from his challenger in an election involving thousands of delegates.

Following his defeat, Boadu was appointed Director-General of the State Interests and Governance Authority (SIGA) by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in December 2023. This public-sector leadership role added to his long political career, demonstrating that the loss of a party position had not brought his public career to an end.

In the recent 2026 election, Boadu secured 2,888 votes to become the NPP's National Chairman, defeating former Energy Minister Boakye Kyerematen Agyarko, who obtained 2,408 votes, and former National Chairman Paul Afoko, who polled 790. Kodua retained the General Secretary position, securing 4,486 votes against Sylvester Tetteh's 1,340.

The new arrangement has resulted in an unexpected institutional partnership between Boadu and Kodua, who now occupy complementary positions in the NPP's national leadership structure. Boadu's victory and Kodua's retention of their respective positions have significant implications for the party's reorganization and preparation for the 2028 general election.

In his acceptance speech, Boadu called for unity and extended a hand of fellowship to the other contestants, stressing that their ideas, experience, networks, and commitment could contribute to strengthening the party. He urged members to put the collective interest of the party ahead of personal ambitions, highlighting the importance of collaboration in the party's future success.
