Heavy fighting has broken out in the Katogota axis of the Democratic Republic of Congo, as FRN rebels led by Joseph Kabila clash with government troops and their allies. The conflict has seen both sides suffer losses, with the Congolese troops and their allies being dislodged from Luvungi by FRN rebels. This development has raised concerns about the security situation in the region, with residents fleeing to nearby areas.

According to reports, the FARDC command has withdrawn its Guépard unit from Luvungi in the Ruzizi plain, amid allegations of treason against some of its units. The Cheetahs unit, accused of treason, was disarmed and replaced by the Owls and Black Snakes units. However, the new units appear to be struggling with morale, with members of the FARDC Owls unit seen huddled together, seemingly demoralized.

The FRN rebels have established a multilayered resistance against the Congolese troops, with reinforcements being brought in to support their positions. The rebels are said to be in control of several strategic positions on the mountains overlooking the Ruzizi plain, and are advancing towards key locations including Uvira, Baraka, Fizi, Misisi, Lulimba, and Kalemie.

The conflict has led to a significant displacement of residents, with many fleeing towards Kamanyola and Luvungi, fearing a repeat of the violence that led to the fall of Uvira in December 2025. The situation remains volatile, with both sides continuing to reinforce their positions. The capture of Luvungi by FRN rebels could significantly alter the balance of power in the region.

On Sunday, November 1, the Owls and Black Snakes units took over from the Cheetahs unit, which was accused of treason. The move is seen as an effort to shore up the government's military presence in the region. However, the FRN rebels continue to make gains, with their positions being reinforced as well.

The conflict has also drawn in troops from Burundi, who are fighting alongside the Congolese troops. However, their attempts to retake key positions, including Kuwamabuye and Gipimo, have so far been unsuccessful. The situation remains fluid, with both sides vying for control of strategic locations.

The fighting in the Katogota axis is part of a broader conflict in eastern DRC, where various armed groups are vying for control of territory and resources. The situation has raised concerns about the humanitarian impact on civilians, who are caught in the middle of the conflict.
