Fresh clashes have been reported in several locations across North and South Kivu provinces in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. The fighting involves the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo, allied Wazalendo militia fighters, and the Front for the Refoundation of the Nation rebel movement. Local sources confirm that the clashes began at around 7:00 a.m. in South Kivu. The fighting has raised renewed concerns over efforts to secure a ceasefire in the region.

In North Kivu, clashes were reported in Kilongo and Mahanga villages in Nyamaboko I Groupement, Masisi Territory. Government forces and their Wazalendo allies reportedly launched an offensive to dislodge FRN fighters from their positions. Fighting was also reported in Kibati, Walikale Territory. The FRN, a rebel movement, has been involved in ongoing armed confrontations in the region.

According to Lawrence Kanyuka, spokesperson for the FRN, government forces and their Wazalendo allies launched attacks involving combat drones, fighter jets, heavy artillery, and ground troops. Kanyuka accused the government in Kinshasa of continuing to pursue a military solution despite repeated calls for de-escalation. The FRN spokesperson alleged that the authorities were promoting hate speech and imposing war on civilian populations.

The FRN spokesperson maintained that the group’s fighters remained deployed on the ground, claiming that their operations were aimed at protecting civilians. Kanyuka described the group’s activities as being conducted with determination, discipline, and professionalism. However, the claims made by Kanyuka regarding the attacks and the conduct of government forces had not been independently verified.

The latest clashes come amid ongoing efforts to secure a ceasefire and promote stability in eastern DR Congo.
