In a medicalized retirement home in southwestern France, an 83-year-old Alzheimer's patient, Mme R., engages in a conversation with her artificial intelligence-powered companion, Livana. The AI, designed to mimic the voice of her grandson, Bastien, chats with Mme R. for several minutes, helping to calm her and alleviate symptoms of her condition. Livana's creator, Nicolas Raulin, explains that the AI is 100% personalized, preconfigured by the family and the patient's psychologue to stimulate conversation.

The Livana AI has been tested in a protected unit for Alzheimer's patients at the Septfontoise establishment in Tarn-et-Garonne. According to the French Alzheimer's association, approximately 1.4 million people in France suffer from the neurodegenerative disease, which severely impacts memory, cognitive functions, and autonomy. At Septfontoise, seven out of 29 Alzheimer's patients participate in the Livana experiment, which aims to calm patients during agitation phases without medication.

The use of AI in Alzheimer's care is also being explored at the Broca Living Lab, a research laboratory at the Assistance publique-Hôpitaux de Paris. Dr. Maribel Pino leads the research, which involves robots equipped with AI to interact with elderly patients with cognitive disabilities or loss of autonomy. The laboratory tests various robots, including Miroki, a humanoid robot, and Paro, a therapeutic baby seal.

During a session at the Broca Living Lab, two residents, Michèle and Ginette, interact with the robots. Michèle, 72, engages in a conversation with Miroki, which stimulates her memory and cognitive functions. In contrast, 99-year-old Ginette is hesitant to interact with Miroki but warms up to Paro, which adapts its movements and vocalizations to her behavior.

According to Léa Vecchioni, a psychologist and research engineer at the Broca Living Lab, the robots serve different purposes. Miroki is designed for cognitive stimulation, while Paro aims to calm patients and encourage conversation. The researchers emphasize that the robots are not meant to replace human interaction but rather complement the care provided by healthcare professionals.
