The fraud and corruption case against Ekurhuleni City Manager Kagiso Lerutla and suspended Metro Police Deputy Chief Julius Mkhwanazi has been postponed to 3 November. Mkhwanazi was arrested at his home, while Lerutla was arrested at OR Tambo International Airport after returning from Cape Town.
On 29 September, the pair was supposed to appear before the Boksburg Magistrates Court for a status update. However, a request for Mkhwanazi to be brought to court was submitted late, leaving only Lerutla in the dock. The court heard that the required 48-hour requisition for Mkhwanazi's attendance had only been submitted on Monday, prompting the magistrate to stand down the matter and call for the process to be handled correctly.
Mkhwanazi also faces a separate firearms charge in addition to the fraud and corruption charges. The case has been postponed to 3 November, allowing the defence to prepare and the State to finalize its case. The Ekurhuleni City Manager and the suspended Metro Police Deputy Chief have been out of their positions since their arrests.
