The French government has mobilized €1.3 million to support the implementation of a project titled "Support to the Rule of Law in Favor of Victims of Sexual Violence in Conflict Zones" in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. This announcement was made following a meeting between Congolese authorities and a delegation from the French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs on October 2. The initiative aims to facilitate free access to justice for victims while strengthening their right to reparations.

The project aligns with France's commitment to supporting women and girls who are victims of sexual violence, particularly in eastern DR Congo, where such atrocities continue to affect thousands of people. French Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, Jean-Noël Barrot, emphasized that the reparations for women and girls victims of sexual violence are at the heart of French diplomacy's commitment. He noted that such violence constitutes not only human tragedies but also obstacles to peace.

The French authorities have welcomed the collaboration between the Congolese government, the National Fund for Reparations for Victims of Sexual Violence Linked to Conflict and Crimes Against Humanity (FONAREV), and the French Embassy in DR Congo. According to Minister Barrot, this partnership will enable concerted action alongside NGOs to help women victims of sexual atrocities access healthcare, justice, and reparations.

The project involves a coordinated approach among several stakeholders. The Congolese Ministry of Justice is responsible for ensuring victims' access to the judicial system, while FONAREV provides their support and ensures the implementation of reparations. Technical partners and civil society organizations will also play a crucial role in implementing the project, particularly through legal assistance, victim orientation, and on-the-ground case follow-up.

Through this initiative, the Congolese and French authorities aim to strengthen the fight against impunity linked to sexual violence in conflict-affected areas while promoting more comprehensive care for survivors through effective access to justice, healthcare, and reparations. These conditions are considered essential for the reconstruction of communities and the consolidation of peace in DR Congo.

The project is a significant step towards addressing the plight of victims of sexual violence in DR Congo, who have been affected by conflicts for many years. The collaboration between the Congolese government and French authorities demonstrates a shared commitment to defending the fundamental rights of women and girls.

The implementation of this project is expected to have a positive impact on the lives of thousands of victims of sexual violence in DR Congo. By providing access to justice, healthcare, and reparations, the project aims to contribute to the reconstruction of communities and the consolidation of peace in the region.
