The Abia State Police Command has apprehended four suspects for their alleged involvement in the theft of a four-day-old baby from a mentally unstable mother. According to the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Maureen Chinaka, the suspects were arrested on September 16 following credible intelligence. The suspects, comprising two males and two females, have been identified as Gladys Nathaniel, 48; Victor Udochukwu, 47; Chijioke Obunwa, 59; and Onyeonoro Chinwe, 43.
The police alleged that the suspects conspired to steal the baby and subsequently sold the infant to another person. The operation was carried out by operatives of the Violent Crimes Response Unit (VCRU) and Rapid Response Unit (RRU) Obehie. DSP Maureen Chinaka stated that diligent police investigation led to the apprehension of the suspects. The police have confirmed that the baby and mother have been rescued.
The mother, who is mentally ill, has been released to her family for proper care and medical attention. Meanwhile, the infant has been handed over to the Ministry of Women Affairs for protective custody. The police have stated that the suspects are currently in custody and that investigations are ongoing at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID).
Upon conclusion of investigations, the suspects will be charged to court. The Commissioner of Police, Abia State Command, CP Wilfred Olutokunbo Afolabi, has reiterated the command's commitment to protecting vulnerable persons.
