Former Tottenham Hotspur and Switzerland defender Ramon Vega has announced his intention to run for FIFA president, becoming the first declared challenger to incumbent Gianni Infantino ahead of next year’s election. Vega, 55, unveiled his campaign through an 11-page document calling for major reforms at world football’s governing body. He stated that his life has prepared him to serve the game and that he believes he has a duty to protect and defend football — its integrity, its people and its future.

Vega argued that trust in FIFA has been damaged and said his campaign would focus on rebuilding credibility, modernizing governance and bringing different sections of the global football community back together. To be eligible for the election, Vega needs to secure formal support from at least five member associations. He previously considered seeking FIFA’s top position following Sepp Blatter’s departure and later attempted to challenge Infantino but failed to secure enough federation backing.

The former centre-back earned 23 caps for Switzerland and represented clubs including Grasshoppers, Cagliari, Tottenham, Celtic and Watford before moving into finance after retirement. Vega stated that football is in a state of emergency and that FIFA needs a new direction and fundamental reform. His candidacy is seen as a significant development in the lead-up to the 2027 FIFA presidential election.

Infantino has already confirmed that he will seek re-election in 2027. The FIFA president, who has held the position since 2016, made his plans official during the FIFA Congress in Vancouver earlier this year. His latest bid comes during a period of increased criticism following the collapse of the FIFA Forward Enterprise proposal.

The proposal would have involved outside investment in FIFA’s commercial and tournament operations, but it was met with skepticism from various stakeholders. UEFA and several national federations have subsequently questioned Infantino’s leadership, although he continues to receive significant backing, including from CAF and a number of Arab football associations.

The presidential election is scheduled for March 18, 2027, in Rabat, Morocco, giving next year’s FIFA Congress an added Moroccan dimension. Vega must now secure the required federation nominations before he can formally appear on the ballot against Infantino. If successful, Vega would be the first challenger to Infantino to be elected.

The election outcome will have significant implications for the future of FIFA and world football. Vega’s campaign focuses on reform and rebuilding trust, while Infantino’s bid is seen as a bid for continuity. The successful candidate will need to navigate complex issues, including governance, finance and global relationships, to lead FIFA effectively.
