Former South African cricketer Gulam Bodi has issued a letter of demand to the Minister of Police, Professor Firoz Cachalia, National Commissioner Lieutenant General Puleng Dimpane, and Gauteng Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni, seeking R1.26 million in damages. The demand, dated October 7, 2026, relates to an alleged incident on August 17, 2026, where Bodi claims three police officers unlawfully stopped him, searched his vehicle and person, and took his property.
According to Bodi's attorneys, SN Mnguni Attorneys Inc, the incident occurred on the N14 near Krugersdorp, where a marked SAPS vehicle made a U-turn, followed Bodi's vehicle, and instructed him to stop. The officers, two men and a woman, allegedly approached Bodi, with at least one male officer carrying a visible rifle. The attorneys claim the officers did not identify themselves and that the circumstances were intimidating, given the late-night setting and isolated location.
Bodi's attorneys allege that the officers conducted an unlawful search of his vehicle and person, finding nothing, and then took R10,600 in cash and a power bank valued at R1,000. The search was allegedly conducted without consent, and no warrant or statutory basis was provided. The attorneys claim Bodi was subjected to physical force and intimidation during the encounter, including being grabbed and held down against his vehicle while a rifle was pointed at him.
Following the incident, Bodi lodged a complaint at Kagiso SAPS, but faced difficulties in registering the case. The matter was eventually registered as Kagiso CAS 374/9/2026 on September 22, 2026, over a month after the alleged incident. Bodi's attorneys are demanding an explanation for the delay and details on the investigating officer and any disciplinary steps taken against the officers involved.
The letter of demand also requests confirmation on whether the matter has been referred to the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID). Bodi's attorneys argue that the alleged actions of the police officers constituted an unlawful search, assault, deprivation of property, intimidation, and emotional harm, entitling him to damages.
The R1.26 million claim includes R10,600 for the cash taken, R1,000 for the power bank, R250,000 for medical and psychological assessments, and R1 million in general damages. Bodi's attorneys emphasize that the amount is provisional and may be amended or increased after obtaining further information and expert reports.
Police ministry spokesperson Kamogelo Mogotsi stated that the Legal Services department will handle the matter and advise the Minister on the merits of the case. The police had not provided further comments by the time of publication.
