First National Bank (FNB) has entered South Africa's cryptocurrency market, offering its customers the ability to buy and trade selected digital assets. This new service is available through FNB's existing share-trading platform, allowing customers to access five cryptocurrencies: Bitcoin, Ethereum, Ripple (XRP), Solana, and USDT. The offering is designed to provide customers with exposure to alternative investments, in line with growing interest in digital assets.
FNB has partnered with South African cryptocurrency exchange VALR to facilitate the trading of these digital assets. The crypto offering is available across various FNB products, including Share Saver, Share Builder, Share Investor, and Share Zero. Customers can start trading with as little as R10, and trading is available 24/7. According to Sizwe Nxedlana, CEO of FNB and RMB Private Banking and Wealth Management, this move aims to leverage the bank's investment expertise to provide customers with access to crypto assets.
The decision to launch cryptocurrency trading comes in response to increased interest from FNB customers in alternative investments. Bheki Mkhize, CEO of FNB Wealth and Asset Management, noted that clients have been seeking a trusted platform for cryptocurrency trading. The bank's offering is designed to provide customers with a secure and compliant environment for trading digital assets, with the crypto assets ring-fenced within the FNB ecosystem.
A key feature of FNB's cryptocurrency service is its focus on security and compliance. Customers fund their purchases from their FNB accounts, and the crypto assets cannot be transferred into or out of the platform. This approach allows FNB to maintain greater control over security, compliance, and exchange-control requirements. The bank plans to expand the range of crypto assets available over time and provide customers with educational materials on the asset class and its risks.
FNB's entry into the cryptocurrency market makes it the latest South African bank to offer retail cryptocurrency trading. Discovery Bank previously launched a similar service in partnership with Luno in 2025. The growing interest in cryptocurrency trading among South African investors has led to an increase in services offered by local banks and financial institutions.
The partnership with VALR enables FNB to provide customers with access to a trusted and reliable cryptocurrency exchange. VALR is a well-established player in the South African cryptocurrency market, offering a range of digital assets and trading services. By leveraging VALR's expertise, FNB aims to provide customers with a seamless and secure trading experience.
As the cryptocurrency market continues to evolve, FNB's offering is expected to provide customers with greater flexibility and diversification options for their investments. The bank's focus on education and risk management is likely to appeal to customers seeking to navigate the complexities of cryptocurrency trading. With its existing customer base and trusted brand, FNB is well-positioned to make a significant impact in South Africa's cryptocurrency market.
