A severe flood has hit Akaeze and surrounding communities in Ivo Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, causing widespread destruction and displacement. The disaster, which occurred on September 23, has affected 134 families, who have lost their homes, farms, and household property. The flooding has also submerged rice, yam, and other farmlands, disrupting trading activities and leaving several residents temporarily homeless.
The Ebonyi State Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Chukwuma Igwe, led a delegation to the affected communities to assess the damage and provide immediate assistance. Igwe disclosed that the party's 2027 governorship candidate, Ifeanyi Chukwuma Odii, had released N5 million to support the victims. The fund will be distributed to affected residents, with N2 million allocated to those in Akaeze and the remaining amount to other affected communities.
According to Igwe, a list of 54 affected families in Akaeze has been obtained, and further assessments will be conducted in other communities to determine the extent of the damage. He expressed sympathy with the victims, stating that the party's intervention was not a substitute for government assistance. Igwe urged relevant authorities and emergency management agencies to respond to the situation and provide relief to the affected communities.
The PDP spokesman in Ebonyi State, Comrade Darlington Onwe, described the flooding as a major humanitarian disaster. He noted that the immediate assistance provided by the party was a demonstration of its concern for the affected communities. Onwe emphasized that a more comprehensive intervention was required to rebuild damaged homes, restore livelihoods, and address the environmental factors responsible for the flooding.
The Chairman of Amaegbu Umobo Akaeze, Abia Okoro Abia, reported that over 54 victims had been identified in the area, with many more affected. The flood has destroyed houses and farmlands, including rice and yam farms, leaving several families in urgent need of assistance. Residents have begun to relocate, with some seeking alternative accommodation.
Victims of the flood have appealed to the Federal and Ebonyi State governments to provide urgent relief and technical intervention to the affected area. They have also called for measures to address the underlying causes of the flooding and prevent a recurrence.
