Fenchurch Group has commenced the rehabilitation of the 26-megawatt Akute Independent Power Plant in Nigeria. The project aims to provide dedicated electricity to major Lagos waterworks. The first 10MW of power is expected to be delivered within four months. This initiative is being developed by Fenchurch Power Limited through Aggregate Utilities Limited, the group’s special purpose vehicle. The project is being delivered under a concession agreement with the Lagos State Government.
The 26MW Akute power plant will support the operation of the Akute intake, as well as the Iju and Adiyan waterworks. These waterworks rely heavily on electricity for water production. The remaining 16MW of power is expected to be delivered within 12 months. Surplus power generated will be exported to the Ikeja Electric network. This development is expected to enhance the reliability of water infrastructure in Lagos State.
Group Chief Executive Officer of Fenchurch Group, Olufemi Bakare, emphasized the importance of the project. He stated that the initiative was intended to keep the water infrastructure running reliably. Lagos State has invested significantly in its water infrastructure, and Fenchurch Group’s mandate is to ensure its continuous operation. The project will provide the necessary power to keep the water infrastructure running round the clock.
The equipment for the project is being prepared at the Oregun fabrication yard of Jubaili Bros. A stakeholder visit was conducted at the yard to assess the progress of the project. During the visit, Bakare highlighted the significance of the project in ensuring the reliable operation of Lagos State’s water infrastructure. The project is a collaboration between Fenchurch Group and the Lagos State Government.
Agiri Mustafa, Head of Production at Lagos Water Corporation, emphasized the crucial role of reliable electricity in water production. He stated that most of the corporation’s equipment is power-driven. The corporation will be the primary off-taker of the electricity generated when the equipment is installed. This partnership will ensure a stable power supply for water production.
