The Controller, Federal Fire Service, FCT Command, Muhammed Anas, has cautioned residents to be vigilant, particularly in low-lying areas, riverbanks and communities with inadequate drainage systems. Heavy and persistent rains have been experienced in the territory, prompting the warning. Anas emphasized that flooding was often exacerbated by human activities, stressing that safeguarding lives and property was a shared responsibility.
Anas identified building on floodplains, waterways and drainage channels, as well as blocking or covering drainage systems with structures, kiosks and shops, as major contributors to flooding. He urged residents to desist from such practices. Other activities that contribute to flooding include dumping refuse in drains, gutters, canals and waterways; sand dredging; and indiscriminate excavation near rivers and streams.
The erection of buildings without approved plans or adequate drainage provisions, poor construction of roads and culverts that obstruct the natural flow of water, as well as farming and construction along riverbanks and in flood-prone areas, also contribute to flooding. Anas advised residents to contribute to efforts to mitigate the effects of flooding by regularly clearing drains, gutters and their surroundings of refuse and debris.
Residents were urged to avoid settling or constructing buildings in flood-prone and low-lying areas, monitor weather forecasts and heed flood alerts issued by relevant authorities. Anas also warned residents against crossing flooded roads, bridges, streams or rivers, whether on foot or in vehicles, stressing that children should be kept away from floodwaters, drains, rivers and open culverts.
In the event of flooding, residents are advised to remain calm and move immediately to higher ground or another safe location. They should switch off the power supply at the mains and avoid touching electrical appliances, wires or other electrical installations. Valuables, important documents, food supplies and other essential items should be moved to higher levels where possible.
Anas reaffirmed the commitment of the FFS, FCT Command, to responding swiftly to emergencies and safeguarding lives and property across the territory. He appealed to residents to cooperate with emergency responders, obey safety instructions and promptly report flood incidents and other emergencies to the appropriate authorities.
The warning was issued on 30 September 2026, as the FCT continues to experience intensifying rainfall. The Federal Fire Service is working to mitigate the effects of flooding in the territory. Residents are advised to take necessary precautions to ensure their safety and the safety of their property.
