A fire that broke out at Taifa June-July in the Greater Accra Region of Ghana has destroyed over 100 wooden structures and three metal containers. The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) reported that firefighters from the Madina Fire Station and the GNFS Headquarters Sub-Station were deployed to tackle the blaze at the busy commercial area. The fire had already gained momentum by the time firefighters arrived at the scene.

Despite the scale of destruction, firefighters managed to stop the flames from reaching over 200 adjoining wooden structures in the area. The Sabbath Faith Salvation Church building, which stood close to the affected area, was also salvaged from the blaze. The GNFS confirmed that no casualties or injuries were recorded in the incident. The fire service has attributed the success in containing the fire to the swift response of the firefighters.

In a separate incident at Lapaz Tabora No. 5, an Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) transformer was completely destroyed by an electrical fire. Firefighters from the Dansoman Fire Station responded to the outbreak, but the transformer could not be saved. The cause of the electrical fire that destroyed the transformer is not specified in the GNFS statement.

The GNFS has urged the public to observe fire safety precautions and to report outbreaks promptly to the nearest fire station so that emergency responders can act swiftly and limit damage to property and loss of lives. Market areas like Taifa June-July, dominated by closely packed wooden kiosks and containers, remain especially vulnerable to fires that can spread rapidly once they start.

The fire at Taifa June-July has destroyed the livelihoods of multiple traders within a short time. The extent of the losses suffered by traders whose shops were destroyed, and whether any support will be extended to them, is not addressed in the GNFS statement. The GNFS is yet to provide further details on the incident.

According to the GNFS, the fire outbreak at Taifa June-July and the separate incident at Lapaz are a reminder of the importance of fire safety precautions. The service has assured the public of its commitment to responding promptly to fire outbreaks and minimizing damage to property.

The Ghana National Fire Service has called for calm and assured the public that it is doing everything possible to prevent such incidents in the future. The GNFS has also expressed gratitude to the public for their cooperation and support in reporting fire outbreaks promptly.
