Nigerian pharmaceutical giant Fidson Healthcare Plc has been chosen to develop and manufacture a generic version of Roche's influenza antiviral, baloxavir marboxil. This selection is part of a global voluntary licensing agreement that will supply the drug to 129 countries. Fidson is one of 11 manufacturers across nine countries selected for this initiative, which aims to expand access to influenza treatment and strengthen preparedness for future outbreaks and pandemics.

The voluntary licensing agreement between the Medicines Patent Pool and Roche enables selected manufacturers to develop, manufacture, and supply generic versions of baloxavir marboxil. The agreement covers nearly all low- and middle-income countries, subject to regulatory authorization. This development was announced during the United Nations General Assembly in New York, where global leaders discussed pandemic prevention, preparedness, and response.

The Medicines Patent Pool's Executive Director, Charles Gore, stated that the organization will work with selected manufacturers on product development and regulatory approval. The goal is to make quality-assured generic baloxavir available as quickly as possible while combining global manufacturing capacity with regionally focused production. This approach aims to build a more geographically diverse manufacturing base before the next health emergency.

The selection of Fidson Healthcare as a sublicensee under the Roche-MPP voluntary licensing program validates the company's commitment to quality-assured pharmaceutical manufacturing, innovation, and improved healthcare outcomes. Fidson's Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Biola Adebayo, expressed pride in contributing to efforts aimed at strengthening regional health security and preparedness for future health emergencies.

The partnership between Fidson and the Medicines Patent Pool reinforces the growing role of African manufacturers in the global health ecosystem. Adebayo emphasized that Fidson is committed to delivering quality-assured, world-class healthcare solutions that add value to lives. The company's involvement in this initiative demonstrates its dedication to improving healthcare outcomes in Africa and beyond.

The Medicines Patent Pool selected manufacturers following an open Expression of Interest process launched after the licensing agreement with Roche was signed in May. Applicants were assessed based on criteria including their technical and regulatory capacities and commitment to developing and manufacturing quality-assured baloxavir products. The selection includes four manufacturers with a global presence and seven regionally focused manufacturers.

The initiative combines global and regionally focused manufacturers to diversify supply pathways for influenza treatment, strengthen supply resilience, and bring production capacity closer to the regions and populations intended to receive the medicines. This approach is expected to enhance pandemic preparedness and response, ensuring that low- and middle-income countries have access to essential medicines during health emergencies.
