A 40-year-old Fidelity security guard was arrested on Thursday, November 5, 2026, at his Gugulethu home after Hawks investigators uncovered evidence suggesting that a cash-in-transit robbery near Cape Town International Airport was staged with the help of the very people entrusted to protect the money. The arrest followed an investigation into the September 2025 robbery in Borchards Quarry Road, Airport Industria.

According to Hawks spokesperson Captain Zinzi Hani, the Fidelity crew was travelling along Airport Approach Road towards its base in Parow Industria when a white Nissan bakkie stopped in front of the armoured vehicle. The truck collided with the bakkie. When the driver attempted to reverse, a white Toyota Fortuner blocked the vehicle from behind, while a Volkswagen Polo pulled up. Gunmen emerged from the vehicles and opened fire on the cash-in-transit truck, forcing the guards to flee into nearby bushes.

The investigation led detectives to suspect that the robbery had been staged, with two members of the Fidelity crew allegedly involved. Hani said investigators concluded that "the Cash in Transit Robbery appeared to have been staged". According to the Hawks, "two of the Fidelity guards were believed to have been involved". The DPP ruled that the driver and the crewman should be arrested and charged. Only the crewman has been arrested so far.

The robbery occurred when armed robbers ambushed a Fidelity cash van in Airport Industria and used explosives to gain access to the money. The Hawks said a warrant was obtained on 30 October after the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) considered the completed investigation. An undisclosed amount of money was taken and never recovered.

The 40-year-old appeared in the Bishop Lavis Magistrates' Court on Friday, 6 November 2026. The case was postponed to 18 November for a bail application. The suspect will apply for bail, and tracing continues for the second person believed to be involved in the alleged inside job.

This case follows other investigations into alleged inside involvement in cash-in-transit robberies. In a separate case, three Fidelity guards were arrested over an alleged inside job in Bloemfontein. The Hawks' investigation raises questions about the security measures in place to protect cash-in-transit vehicles.

The alleged inside job highlights the need for increased vigilance and stricter security protocols to prevent such incidents in the future. The suspect's arrest and potential bail application will be closely watched, as the case continues to unfold. Key developments in the case include the arrest of a Fidelity guard, the suspected involvement of a second Fidelity crew member, and the postponement of the case to 18 November for a bail application.
