The Federal Government of Nigeria has positioned the country's hosting of the Creative Africa Nexus (CANEX) Weekend 2026 as a major platform for transforming the nation's creative economy. The event, scheduled to take place in Lagos from November 5-8, will connect creators and creative enterprises with investors, financiers, technology providers, distributors, and international markets. According to Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Dr. Jumoke Oduwole, the event will go beyond celebrating African creativity.

Nigeria's strength in music, film, fashion, literature, visual arts, gastronomy, sports, and other creative fields presents an opportunity to capture greater economic value from the country's talent. The Federal Government aims to build a $1 trillion economy, and the creative economy is expected to play a significant role in achieving this goal. Dr. Oduwole emphasized that CANEX is not just a celebration of African creativity but a platform for trade, investment, enterprise, and market access.

The four-day event will feature programs spanning music, film, fashion, gastronomy, literature, visual arts, sports, and technology, alongside investment, financing, enterprise, and market-access engagements. CANEX has been designed as a meeting point for the various components of the creative economy, rather than simply an exhibition or cultural showcase. The event is expected to attract around 10,000 participants from Nigeria, Africa, and other parts of the world.

The Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment is collaborating with the Federal Ministry of Arts, Culture, Tourism, and the Creative Economy, as well as institutions responsible for foreign affairs, finance, customs, immigration, and the Central Bank of Nigeria. The Lagos State Government is also involved in the preparations, with the state activating measures to manage the expected influx of participants.

Lagos State has deployed health, traffic, and emergency measures to ensure a seamless event. The state has activated its disease surveillance and emergency-response mechanisms, with medical facilities around the venue and accommodation areas being equipped for emergency response. The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) will deploy ambulances to strategic locations for evacuation and transfer of patients to designated hospitals.

The Lagos State Ministry of Transportation is preparing traffic-management measures to minimize disruption caused by the expected concentration of visitors around the venue. Traffic advisories will be issued ahead of the event, with diversions introduced at strategic points and alternative routes provided for motorists. The event is expected to showcase products, enterprises, culture, and investment opportunities from across the country, with each of the 36 states having a pavilion at CANEX.

The participation of the Nigerian Governors' Forum, the National Economic Council, and the 36 states will give the event a broad national character. The event aims to see partnerships formed, financing mobilized, intellectual property commercialized, businesses entering new markets, and Nigerian creative enterprises scaling beyond the country's borders. The Federal Government seeks stronger financing, IP protection, and market access for creative businesses.
