The Federal Government of Nigeria has confirmed that Vice President Kashim Shettima will lead the country's delegation to the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York. According to a press statement signed by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has mandated Shettima to represent him at the General Assembly. Shettima will deliver Nigeria's national statement and participate in high-level meetings with world leaders.
The Vice President's engagements in New York are expected to advance Nigeria's priorities on peace and security, economic development, climate action, and sustainable development. The government stated that Shettima carries the full mandate of President Tinubu and the Federal Republic of Nigeria. The Federal Government also responded to recent comments by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and a US-based lobbying organisation retained by him. They had questioned President Tinubu's non-attendance and sought to impute false motives to it. The government emphasised Nigeria's longstanding relationship with the United States, covering trade, investment, security cooperation, energy, and democratic institutions.
