The Federal Government of Nigeria has commenced the payment of additional exit benefits to federal retirees under the Federal Government Exit Benefit Scheme, which was approved and commenced on January 1, 2026. According to the National Pension Commission (PenCom), approximately N1.1bn has been paid to 175 retirees who exited the Federal Public Service between January 1 and August 31, 2026. This scheme provides eligible federal civil servants with an additional financial benefit when they retire.
The Federal Government Exit Benefit Scheme gives federal civil servants who have served for at least 10 years an exit benefit equal to 100 per cent of their total annual emolument. This payment is separate from their pension benefits under the Contributory Pension Scheme. The 2026 Appropriation provided N32.90bn for the scheme, and so far, the Federal Government has released N12.3bn into a dedicated Exit Benefit Scheme Account with the Central Bank of Nigeria.
The National Pension Commission disclosed this in a statement on Friday, stating that the N1.1bn payment marked the formal commencement of the scheme. PenCom stressed that the exit benefit does not replace existing pension benefits under the Contributory Pension Scheme. Instead, it is an additional payment, existing alongside the usual benefits drawn by the retirees from their Retirement Savings Account (RSA) balances.
The commission added that future retirees from Treasury-funded Federal Government ministries, departments, and agencies will qualify for the benefit if they meet the scheme's requirements. This move aims to provide financial support to retirees and enhance their well-being after years of service to the nation.
The Federal Government's decision to commence the payment of additional exit benefits is part of its efforts to improve the welfare of federal civil servants. The scheme is expected to benefit many retirees who have dedicated their lives to serving the nation. With the release of N12.3bn into the dedicated account, the government has demonstrated its commitment to implementing the scheme.
The payment of additional exit benefits is a significant development in the nation's pension system. It highlights the government's efforts to address the challenges faced by retirees and ensure their financial security. The National Pension Commission will continue to oversee the implementation of the scheme and ensure that eligible retirees receive their benefits.
As the government continues to implement the Federal Government Exit Benefit Scheme, more retirees are expected to benefit from the program. The scheme's success will depend on effective implementation and adequate funding. The government's commitment to providing financial support to retirees is commendable, and it is hoped that the scheme will have a positive impact on the lives of many Nigerian retirees.
