The Federal Government of Nigeria has addressed concerns regarding President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's absence from the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York. According to Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, Vice President Kashim Shettima will lead Nigeria's delegation in the President's stead. Shettima will deliver Nigeria's national statement and engage in high-level meetings with world leaders, international organisations, and development partners.
Minister Idris stated that President Tinubu mandated Shettima to represent him at the General Assembly, ensuring Nigeria's full representation throughout the high-level session. The Vice President will act with the full mandate of the President and the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Idris emphasised that Shettima's engagements in New York will focus on advancing Nigeria's priorities, including peace and security, economic development, climate action, and sustainable development.
President Tinubu is currently on annual leave, and the decision to have Vice President Shettima lead the delegation was not unusual, according to Idris. The Minister stressed that this decision does not diminish Nigeria's diplomatic standing. He also acknowledged recent public commentary by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and a United States-based lobbying organisation regarding Tinubu's absence from the General Assembly.
Idris urged political actors to distinguish between verified information, political opinion, and speculation when discussing Nigeria's international relations. He reaffirmed Nigeria's longstanding relationship with the United States, which encompasses trade, investment, security cooperation, and democratic institutions. This relationship, Idris stated, will continue through established diplomatic and governmental channels.
