Dr. Adetokunbo Pearse, the Convener of Reset Lagos PDP, has stated that federal might will not guarantee President Bola Tinubu's victory in the 2027 presidential election. In an interview, Pearse explained that the focus of the 2027 campaign should be on the government's performance over the past three years and how candidates plan to improve the quality of life for Nigerians. He emphasized the need for candidates to outline their plans for security, economy, and democracy.
Pearse criticized the ongoing discussions about President Tinubu's past, particularly the alleged drug matter in the US, saying it is a distraction from the real issues. He argued that while the issue of integrity is important, it should not overshadow the main campaign issues. According to Pearse, opponents of Tinubu are concerned about his past because it relates to his character, which is essential for a leader.
The presidential candidate of the Action Democratic Congress (ADC), Atiku Abubakar, has gone to court seeking to disqualify Tinubu from contesting in the next general elections due to certificate forgery. Pearse responded that Atiku is wasting his time, citing previous attempts to disqualify Tinubu over his academic qualifications and identity. Pearse expressed skepticism about the likelihood of Atiku's efforts succeeding.
Pearse attributed the reluctance of the American government to release Tinubu's credentials to the fact that the issue is not new and that there must be a reason beyond Tinubu's influence. He claimed to have knowledge of the US system, having worked and taught in the university system for over 20 years. Pearse suggested that the American government may be protecting someone or some individuals connected to Tinubu's alleged drug dealing and money laundering.
Many Nigerians seem to have lost faith in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), but Pearse insisted that the party is still strong. He blamed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for not recognizing the Taminu Turaki-led PDP, which he claims is the authentic faction. According to Pearse, the PDP has structures in place across the country, with ward and local government officers.
Pearse dismissed the claim that the PDP is no longer viable, citing the party's presence in various states, including Lagos. He mentioned that the PDP's national chairman, Dr. Kabiru Turaki, has assured that the party will field candidates in the 2027 elections. Pearse also noted that in Osun State, the Turaki-led PDP was able to get on the ballot at the last minute.
Pearse concluded that the PDP is poised to participate in the 2027 elections with its structures in place and a presidential candidate in former President Goodluck Jonathan. He expressed confidence that the party will be recognized by INEC and make a strong showing in the elections.
