The Upper East Regional Office of the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) in Ghana, in collaboration with the Consumer Protection Agency, has conducted a successful operation to seize unapproved diapers from various shops across the region. This exercise was prompted by complaints regarding the quality of certain diapers and concerns about their potential health implications, particularly for infants and children.
The operation, which took place in the Bolgatanga and Kassena-Nankana Municipalities, and the Zebilla District, involved officials from the FDA, led by Mr. Jiah Jiato Juah, the Regulatory Officer 1 (RO1). They were accompanied by officials from the Ghana Police Service. Despite pleas from shop owners claiming ignorance of the law, the team confiscated the unapproved diapers.
According to Mr. Abel Ndego, the Acting Regional Head of the FDA, the authority is mandated to protect public health by ensuring that regulated products meet the required safety and quality standards. He emphasized that the FDA's role includes looking out for potential regulated products that may have health implications, especially those that have not been duly registered.
The FDA's database of registered products enables its officers to identify brands that are not authorized for sale in Ghana. Mr. Ndego stated that any brand not on the list of registered products is considered an implicated product and should be removed from the market. The exercise also targeted brands that were registered but had entered Ghana through unapproved channels or were not intended for the Ghanaian market.
The Acting Head further noted that products entering the country through unapproved means or not meant for the Ghanaian market contravene regulations and their marketing authorization terms and conditions. Such products are liable to seizure and detention. This operation is part of efforts to reassure the public that consumer safety remains a priority for the FDA.
Mr. Ndego expressed the FDA's appreciation to the Consumer Protection Agency, the Ghana Police Service, the media, and his staff for their support during the exercise. He appealed to traders whose products were seized to understand that the action was taken in the interest of public health. The exercise provided an opportunity for the FDA to educate traders about the risks associated with exposing unapproved products to consumers.
The FDA reaffirmed its commitment to making the Upper East Region the most regulatory-compliant region in Ghana and securing the welfare and well-being of all Ghanaians, particularly in the Upper East Region. The authority will continue to take actions within the law to protect the region.
