A dramatic scene unfolded at the Mitchells Plain Magistrate's Court on Tuesday as Mntuwovuyo Tshefu, 44, appeared in court for allegedly murdering Kumsa Papu, a 40-year-old mother of two from Belhar. Tshefu was arrested on Sunday after Papu was found with multiple stab wounds at a house in Wild Plum Street, Mandalay. According to the State, Tshefu allegedly barricaded the bedroom door and refused to open it when police arrived.
The incident occurred on Saturday when Papu visited her boyfriend in Mandalay, where several people were gathered. The couple reportedly got into an argument before Tshefu allegedly pulled Papu into a bedroom and locked the door. People in the house heard screaming and called police. When police arrived, Tshefu allegedly attempted to set a couch alight and threatened that everyone would die if police forced the door open.
Police eventually gained access to the bedroom, where Papu was found with multiple stab wounds and was declared dead at the scene. Tshefu faces a murder charge, and the State indicated that it intends to oppose his Schedule 5 bail application. Additional charges of defeating the ends of justice and malicious damage to property could be added. The case was postponed to 6 October for a formal bail application.
Family members filled two rows of the courtroom and erupted in anger and emotion when Tshefu appeared in the dock. One family member shouted: “SATAN!” Outside court, Papu’s sister, Yomi, said the family was battling a “rollercoaster of emotions”. Yomi emphasized that the family would not take matters into their own hands but would allow the law to take its course.
