The Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered the remand of Adeniyi Adeyemi, a 38-year-old man who allegedly posed as Director General of the Presidential Foreign Investment Promotion Council (PFIPC). Adeyemi was remanded in Kuje Correctional Centre over alleged forgery and impersonation. The court order was made by Justice Muhammed Umar after Adeyemi pleaded not guilty to all eight counts.
Adeyemi was arraigned by the Director of Public Prosecutions of the Federation (DPPF), Oyedipo Rotimi, SAN, who appeared for the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF). The AGF's office has taken over the prosecution. Before the plea was taken, the DPPF told the court that the AGF's office would review the case file.
Adeyemi's lawyer, Genesis Francis, told the court that a bail application dated January 12, 2026, had been filed and served on the prosecution, which had responded. However, the court could not hear it because of a congested cause list. The DPPF assured the court that the defendant would receive adequate medical care, including unhindered access to his doctor.
The prosecution alleges that Adeyemi forged a presidential appointment letter purportedly issued by President Bola Tinubu and signed by the Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila. He is also accused of forging State House letterheads and requests for land allocations and office spaces across the 36 states.
An investigation ordered by the presidency and conducted by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) reportedly found that the council had no legal backing. It also found that the outfit had secretly obtained operational instruments and a budget allocation before the alleged fraud was uncovered.
Adeyemi, along with two persons identified only as Femi and Anu, who are said to be at large, is charged with eight counts. The charges include conspiracy to commit forgery, forgery, and impersonation. The forgery and conspiracy counts fall under Section 1(2)(c) of the Miscellaneous Offences Act, Cap M17, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria.
Adeyemi will remain in custody until his bail application is heard on October 12. The case has raised concerns about the prevalence of forgery and impersonation in Nigeria.
