A fabricated article shared on social media platforms, including X, purportedly from Standard Digital, has sparked confusion about Wiper Patriotic Front leader Kalonzo Musyoka's intentions. The article, titled "Rejected Kalonzo threatens to ditch United Opposition," suggests that Musyoka is considering an independent path ahead of the 2027 elections. This claim emerged after a meeting between former Kenyan Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna.
An investigation by PesaCheck, a fact-checking initiative, revealed that the article is not genuine. A thorough review of Standard Digital's website and official social media accounts, including X and Facebook, did not yield any results matching the article in question. Furthermore, a comparison with authentic Standard Digital articles exposed inconsistencies, including the absence of a photo caption and an audio version option.
PesaCheck contacted Standard Group's social media editor, Joan Mwai, who confirmed that the article is not from Standard Digital. Mwai's response via WhatsApp was brief: "Not ours." Additionally, Paloma Gatabaki, communications lead for the Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka (SKM) Command Centre, dismissed the claims as a "targeted and coordinated campaign" aimed at diverting attention from other issues.
Kalonzo Musyoka himself addressed the rumors on his X account on October 25, 2026, stating that his mission is to unite the United Opposition. He accused the regime of paying individuals to spread propaganda and sow confusion within opposition ranks, urging Kenyans to ignore such claims. This statement contradicts the fake article's assertions.
The fake article has been shared on multiple platforms, contributing to the spread of misinformation. PesaCheck's fact-checking efforts are part of a broader initiative to combat false information on social media platforms, including Facebook. By partnering with these platforms, PesaCheck aims to provide the public with accurate information and context.
PesaCheck's managing editor, Doreen Wainainah, oversaw the approval of this fact-check, which was written by Rodgers Omondi and edited by Mary Mutisya and Stephen Ndegwa. PesaCheck is an initiative of Code for Africa, supported by Deutsche Welle Akademie, and partners with local African media and civic watchdog organizations.
As a public finance fact-checking initiative, PesaCheck focuses on verifying the accuracy of media reportage and public pronouncements about numbers that shape our world. The organization seeks to help the public separate fact from fiction, particularly in regards to public finances and Sustainable Development Goals.
