The video, which has a Somali caption that translates to "What an awful laugh. Is he an alcoholic," has been verified by PesaCheck, a fact-checking initiative based in East Africa. The video shows Irro seated in an upholstered chair beside an interviewer, with a blue backdrop displaying the Hudson Institute logo.
According to PesaCheck, the video was taken from a genuine event where Irro participated in a discussion at the Hudson Institute in Washington, D.C. on September 14, 2026. The original image shows Irro delivering a keynote address, followed by a fireside chat with Senior Fellow Joshua Meservey. A comparison of the original image with the altered clip shows the same setting, background, and seating arrangement.
PesaCheck conducted a Google reverse-image search using keyframes from the clip, which led to the original image. The fact-checking initiative also analyzed the clip using Hive Detect, a tool that classified the video as 99.9 percent likely to be AI-generated and the speech as 99.3 percent likely to be AI-generated. The video contains visual inconsistencies consistent with synthetic manipulation.
The combination of visual changes with the AI-generated speech detection further undermines the authenticity of the circulated exchange. Irro's facial movements, particularly his blinking and expressions, change unnaturally between frames, while elements of the interview setup appear to shift in ways that do not correspond to a continuous recording.
The issue of Somaliland's status remains politically sensitive, particularly following Israel's recognition of Somaliland in December 2025, which Somalia rejected. Somalia and Somaliland have had a longstanding political dispute over Somaliland's status, with Somaliland declaring its restoration of independence from Somalia in 1991.
PesaCheck's findings are part of an ongoing series of fact-checks examining content marked as potential misinformation on Facebook and other social media platforms. The fact-checking initiative is helping to sort fact from fiction by partnering with Facebook and similar social media platforms.
