The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has announced plans to temporarily close the runway of Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport in Owerri, Imo State, for 25 days. The closure, set to begin on October 20, 2026, is to facilitate essential repairs. According to FAAN's Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Henry Agbebire, the repairs are necessary due to the deteriorated condition of the runway. Sections of the runway have developed potholes and extensive surface cracks, worsened by recent heavy rainfall.

The planned repairs aim to restore the runway to a safer operational condition and prevent further deterioration. The rehabilitation will involve pavement repairs, treatment of cracks, and resurfacing of affected sections. FAAN stated that the work is being planned ahead of the expected increase in passenger and flight traffic during the Christmas period. The repairs will ensure the airport's safe operation and provide a smoother travel experience for passengers.

The intervention will also include an extension of the runway to enable the airport to accommodate wide-body aircraft. This expansion is expected to improve the airport's capacity as air traffic to the region increases. The upgrade will enhance the overall travel experience for passengers and support the growth of air traffic in the region.

FAAN has urged passengers planning to use the Owerri airport during the proposed closure period to maintain contact with their airlines for information on flight schedules and possible changes. The authority is committed to ensuring that the repairs are carried out efficiently and with minimal disruption to air traffic.

The Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport is a significant airport in southeastern Nigeria, serving the region's growing air traffic demands. The airport's upgrade and expansion are critical to supporting the region's economic growth and providing better services to passengers.

The closure of the runway for repairs is a proactive measure by FAAN to prevent further deterioration and ensure the airport's safe operation. The 25-day closure period is expected to allow for the completion of the repairs, after which the runway will be reopened for operations.

The rehabilitation of the runway and the extension to accommodate wide-body aircraft will contribute to the growth and development of air traffic in Nigeria. The project is part of FAAN's efforts to improve airport infrastructure and provide better services to passengers.
