The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has announced plans to temporarily close the runway of Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport, Owerri, from October 20, for essential repairs and resurfacing. This decision was made due to the deterioration of sections of the runway, including potholes and extensive surface cracks worsened by recent heavy rainfall. The closure is expected to last about 25 days, subject to final confirmation.

According to Mr. Henry Agbebire, FAAN's Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, the planned intervention became necessary to restore the runway to a safer operational condition. The rehabilitation would involve pavement repairs, crack treatment, and resurfacing of affected sections. The project aims to prepare the airport for increased passenger and flight traffic expected during the Christmas travel season.

The runway rehabilitation project will also include an extension of the runway to enable the airport to accommodate wide-body aircraft as traffic to the region grows. This expansion is aimed at improving airport capacity, passenger comfort, and the overall travel experience. FAAN appreciates the understanding and cooperation of all airport users as they undertake these essential works.

Passengers planning to travel through Owerri during the proposed closure period are advised to maintain contact with their airlines for updates on flight schedules and possible alternative arrangements. FAAN will continue to engage relevant stakeholders and announce the confirmed closure and reopening dates once finalised.

The closure of the Owerri airport runway is not the only recent development in Nigeria's aviation sector. FAAN has previously addressed concerns regarding Uber and Bolt operations at Nigerian airports, clarifying that there is no blanket ban on these services. Additionally, FAAN has addressed incidents such as the fire at Lagos airport's Terminal 2.

The Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport, Owerri, plays a significant role in Nigeria's aviation industry, and the rehabilitation of its runway is crucial to ensuring safe and efficient airport operations. FAAN's efforts to improve airport infrastructure demonstrate its commitment to providing a better travel experience for passengers.

FAAN's announcement of the runway closure and rehabilitation has provided stakeholders with advance notice, allowing them to make necessary arrangements. The authority's proactive approach to addressing infrastructure challenges at Nigeria's airports is essential to maintaining the country's aviation industry's growth and development.
