The Ezulwini Palazzo International Convention Centre in Eswatini is emerging as a catalyst for business growth, hosting major international events that create opportunities for the country's tourism and service industries. The centre recently hosted the African Union Seed Summit, the Organisation of African, Caribbean and Pacific States-European Union Parliamentary Assembly, and its official opening celebrations. These events have strengthened expectations that the venue could help revive businesses beyond the traditional hospitality sector. Economist Sanele Sibiya believes the Palazzo could open new opportunities for local enterprises as Eswatini positions itself to attract more continental and international gatherings.
The hosting of the African Union Seed Summit from October 5 to 7 brought significant economic benefits, with over 1,000 delegates booking flights into the kingdom and spending on hotel accommodation, food, clothing, souvenirs, and other goods and services. Minister of Agriculture Mandla Tshawuka stated that many hotels were fully booked during the gathering, adding that the economic gains needed to be considered alongside the cost of hosting the event. Eswatini mobilised approximately E8 million towards the summit, which includes about E7.8 million from AU partners and E1 million raised locally.
Economist Sanele Sibiya noted that the conferences held at the Palazzo have caused a resurgence in the local hospitality industry, which had been struggling. He identified language translation and interpretation services, private security, car rentals, sound systems, and entertainment as businesses that could benefit from increased demand. Sibiya emphasised that visitors typically spend on accommodation, food, sightseeing, souvenirs, and other services, allowing the economic benefits of major gatherings to extend beyond the conference venue.
The Palazzo was officially opened on April 26, during celebrations marking His Majesty King Mswati III's 40 years on the throne and 58th birthday. This event, followed by the hosting of the OACPS-EU Parliamentary Assembly in May and the AU Seed Summit, has placed the facility at the centre of Eswatini's efforts to attract business tourism and international engagement. The centre's potential to drive economic growth has raised expectations among local businesses and stakeholders.
According to Sibiya, the opportunity extends beyond immediate visitor spending, as the Palazzo has demonstrated the country's capacity to host international events. This could potentially attract conferences organised by private companies and non-governmental organisations. However, he indicated that the wider business benefits would depend on whether local enterprises could capitalise on the opportunities. Sibiya emphasised that Eswatini needs to wake up to the many opportunities that will unfold.
Minister Mandla Tshawuka noted that the fundraising efforts for the Seed Summit were meant to lessen the financial burden on the government, not necessarily to cover the full cost. The mobilisation of approximately E8 million towards the summit demonstrates the country's ability to rally resources for major events. This, in turn, could encourage more international gatherings to be held in Eswatini, further boosting the local economy.
As Eswatini continues to position itself as a destination for business tourism and international engagement, the Ezulwini Palazzo International Convention Centre is expected to play a crucial role. With its capacity to host large-scale events, the centre is likely to drive growth in various sectors, including hospitality, services, and supply chain industries. Local enterprises are urged to seize the opportunities arising from the increased demand for services such as private security, car rentals, and interpretation.
