Egypt's energy sector is facing significant challenges, including ensuring the security and sustainability of energy supplies. To address these issues, the Information and Decision Support Center of the Egyptian Cabinet organized a workshop to discuss the current state of the energy sector and potential solutions. The workshop, which is part of a series of preparatory events for the "Egypt 2026" forum, brought together experts and specialists to share their insights and recommendations.

The experts highlighted the importance of developing a comprehensive strategy to address energy security challenges. They emphasized the need for Egypt to prepare for potential shocks and disruptions to energy supplies, given the current regional and global uncertainties. Dr. Ahmed Qandil, deputy director of the Al-Ahram Center for Political and Strategic Studies, stressed the importance of having a strategic reserve of natural gas to mitigate the impact of potential disruptions.

The workshop also focused on the role of renewable energy and regional electricity interconnections in enhancing energy security. Ambassador Omar Abu Aish, former assistant minister of foreign affairs for economic affairs, emphasized the need to expand solar and wind power generation, as well as regional electricity interconnections. He noted that Egypt has a strong infrastructure in this field and is making efforts to connect with neighboring countries.

Experts also discussed the importance of diversifying energy sources and reducing dependence on fossil fuels. Dr. Atia Atia, dean of the College of Engineering at the British University, emphasized the need for Egypt to develop a diverse energy mix, including renewable energy sources, to enhance energy security. He also stressed the importance of investing in energy efficiency measures to reduce energy consumption.

The workshop also touched on the importance of developing a national energy plan that integrates different energy sources and promotes energy efficiency. Engineer Yassin Mohamed, head of the Energy Committee of the Egyptian Engineers' Syndicate, emphasized the need for a comprehensive energy plan that takes into account the country's energy needs and available resources.

The experts' recommendations will be presented at the "Egypt 2026" forum, which will bring together policymakers, experts, and stakeholders to discuss key issues facing the country. The forum aims to provide a platform for dialogue and exchange of ideas on how to address Egypt's challenges and promote sustainable development.
