Former National Population Commission (NPC) Commissioner, Dr. Abdulmalik Mohammed Durunguwa, and his supporters have started a grassroots mobilization effort for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani in preparation for the 2027 elections. This development comes after Durunguwa engaged with a large gathering of politically active women at his residence in Ladduga, Agunu Ward, Kachia Local Government Area of Kaduna State.
The meeting, which drew a substantial crowd of women involved in politics, saw participants express their readiness to mobilize women, their husbands, and other eligible family members in support of Tinubu, Uba Sani, and the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidates. This move highlights the growing focus on grassroots structures in Kaduna State as the 2027 electoral cycle approaches, with political actors emphasizing mobilization, alliances, and representation.
Senior Special Assistant to Governor Uba Sani on Public Affairs, Hon. Victor Mathew Bobai, underscored the significance of sustained political organization in Southern Kaduna. He stressed that political participation should extend beyond election-day activities and social media campaigns to include community consultations, advocacy, negotiation, and continued interaction with political institutions.
According to Bobai, the political future of Southern Kaduna depends on engagement across religious, ethnic, and social lines to build stronger channels for expressing interests and engaging with the government. The emphasis on women's involvement is particularly noteworthy, as family and community networks can serve as avenues for political mobilization. Durunguwa's account of the Kachia meeting specifically highlighted the central role of women in the mobilization effort.
Durunguwa's involvement in the mobilization effort is informed by his extensive public service and political career. He previously served in the Kaduna state government, including as Executive Secretary of the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), and later worked with the Public Complaints Commission. His nomination as Federal Commissioner representing Kaduna State at the National Population Commission was confirmed by the Senate in 2018.
Durunguwa was also an aspirant in the APC governorship contest in Kaduna State in 2022, where Uba Sani emerged as the party's candidate after polling 1,149 votes. Despite the contest, Durunguwa has remained active in Kaduna's political environment, with Bobai describing his subsequent engagement as evidence of the possibility of transitioning from individual political contests to broader political cooperation.
The Kachia engagement has also been linked to the emerging Make That Change (MTC 2031) conversation associated with Durunguwa and his supporters. This framework aims to facilitate discussions around political participation, organization, inclusion, and the longer-term future of Southern Kaduna.
