The European Union Delegation to Nigeria and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has partnered with Nigeria Fashion Week 2026 to promote sustainable fashion, circular production, and green enterprise. This partnership will support the Going Green 5 Initiative, a major feature of the three-day fashion event themed “Beyond the Runway: Fashion and Culture at the Heart of the Green & Blue Economy.” The initiative encourages recycling, upcycling, creative reuse, and responsible sourcing within the fashion industry.

The Going Green Collection, a highlight of the event, will showcase creations made from recycled, upcycled, reclaimed, and environmentally responsible materials by Nigerian and international designers. This collection aims to demonstrate the creative possibilities that exist when fashion meets environmental consciousness. By reimagining materials that might otherwise be discarded, the collection will highlight the role innovation can play in reducing waste.

European Union Ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Gautier Mignot, stated that the partnership aligns with the EU’s wider cooperation with Nigeria on the circular economy. The EU has been working with Nigeria to advance the circular economy, reduce waste, and promote more sustainable patterns of production and consumption. Mignot emphasized that Nigeria’s fashion industry has considerable potential to convert waste materials into new products, businesses, and economic opportunities.

According to Mignot, sustainability must extend beyond conversations and influence everyday decisions about what is produced, how it is produced, and what happens to materials after they have served their original purpose. He also linked sustainable fashion with opportunities for innovation, entrepreneurship, and job creation, particularly among young people. The green message will not be confined to the catwalk, as the partnership will support the Trees for Nigeria Campaign, an environmental initiative of Nigeria Fashion Week.

The Trees for Nigeria Campaign will involve tree-planting and environmental awareness activities, with participation from designers, models, young people, government representatives, development partners, celebrities, and international delegates. There will also be conversations involving designers, manufacturers, policymakers, investors, environmental practitioners, and young creatives, focusing on sustainable fashion, circular production, green innovation, youth entrepreneurship, and responsible consumption.

President of Nigeria Fashion Week and President/CEO of Legendary Gold Limited, Lexy Mojo-Eyes, said the collaboration will help connect Nigeria’s fashion industry with the sustainability agenda. The Going Green 5 Initiative is designed to demonstrate how the creative economy can contribute to environmental responsibility, innovation, and sustainable enterprise. Nigeria Fashion Week 2026 will feature runway showcases, exhibitions, business engagements, the Nigeria Fashion Entrepreneurs Forum, sustainability activities, and the Nigeria Fashion Awards.

With this partnership, Nigeria Fashion Week 2026 promises to make sustainability part of the fashion conversation, shifting the focus from what will be worn on the runway to what the fashion industry can do with what it leaves behind. The event aims to encourage the fashion industry to explore ways of transforming discarded materials into useful and commercially valuable products, promoting a more sustainable future for the industry.
