Esnat Chilije Suleman, Managing Director of FDH Bank Mozambique SA, has been recognized by the Charted Financial Analyst (CFA) Society in 2026 as one of the women in influential decision-making roles in Malawi's investment industry. Her career spans nearly two decades, starting as a trainee economist at Continental Discount House in 2008. The CFA Society is a global not-for-profit organization providing finance education for investment professionals. Esnat's journey to this milestone was shaped by her education, discipline, perseverance, and determination to grow.
Esnat's foundation for a career in finance was laid early in her life. She is the fifth of seven children born to a police officer father and a homemaker mother. Despite periods of limited resources, Esnat's parents prioritized education, instilling in her the value of hard work and discipline. Her father's job required the family to move frequently, resulting in Esnat attending six different schools before completing secondary education. In 2002, she became one of the first two students from Nkhamenya Private Secondary School to be selected to attend the University of Malawi.
At the University of Malawi, Esnat studied social sciences, majoring in economics, and was part of a highly competitive economics class with only two female students. Her interest in finance was sparked during her third year when Continental Discount House recognized her as one of three outstanding economics students. After completing her degree in 2007, Esnat joined Continental Discount House in February 2008 as a trainee economist, where she began learning about the financial sector and money markets.
Esnat's career has taken her to various institutions, including Nico Asset Managers, the Malawi Stock Exchange, and FDH Bank. She has held senior positions, including investment officer, senior investment officer, operations manager, and project manager. In 2015, Esnat became one of eight CFA charterholders in Malawi at the time, having completed the CFA qualification, which tested her discipline and knowledge. The CFA qualification is a globally recognized credential for investment professionals.
Esnat's leadership roles have continued to expand, and in 2019, she joined FDH Bank as senior manager for Treasury and Trade Finance. Two years later, she was promoted to head of treasury and investment banking, overseeing liquidity management, asset and liability management, and investment banking. In March 2026, Esnat became Managing Director of FDH Bank Mozambique, responsible for the bank's strategic direction, governance, and overall leadership.
Esnat's achievements have been recognized through various awards and publications. In 2024, Wealth Magazine named her among its 100 Inspiring Women in Malawi. In 2025, the Pan African Learning and Growth Network recognized her as a Woman of Substance in the financial markets segment. The 2026 CFA Society recognition has added another marker to her journey, highlighting her commitment to her profession and leadership in the investment industry.
