The Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) has announced that Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, the Member of Parliament for Manhyia South, will be put before a weekend court. According to a news release dated October 2, 2026, EOCO is working with the Office of the Attorney-General to meet constitutional timelines. Baffour Awuah voluntarily surrendered to EOCO on October 1, 2026, and has been in custody since then.

EOCO has dismissed claims that Baffour Awuah has been granted bail, stating that the suspect is cooperating with the office to continue with the necessary investigative processes and procedures. The office also urged the public to disregard media reports that a GH₵50 million bail had been granted. Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin and other NPP officials visited Baffour Awuah on October 2, 2026, after which he described the situation as a vicious cycle of political witch-hunting.

Afenyo-Markin likened the conduct of the NDC Government to a police officer determined to arrest a driver at all costs, finding faults to persecute opposition members. He stated that Baffour Awuah is being victimised because he is one of the New Patriotic Party's (NPP) sharpest voices in Parliament. According to Afenyo-Markin, every one of his colleagues is being pursued in one form or the other, and Baffour Awuah's situation will not break them.

Afenyo-Markin accused the government of perpetuating a cycle of political witch-hunting, making it difficult for moderate voices within the NPP to preach restraint. He alleged that the government is using corruption tags to silence critics, including social media activists. Afenyo-Markin called on NPP members to stay united and focused on the party's future, urging them to seize the opportunity and stay committed to the cause of the party.

The Minority Leader challenged the NDC to point to a defining legacy project of President John Dramani Mahama by 2028. He expressed sadness that the NDC's focus seems to be on attacking opponents rather than working for the people of Ghana. Baffour Awuah remains in high spirits despite his situation, according to Afenyo-Markin, who visited him in custody.

EOCO's statement emphasized that the office is working to bring Baffour Awuah before a weekend court, mindful of the applicable constitutional timeframes and procedural requirements governing bail. The office confirmed that Baffour Awuah is cooperating with them and that the necessary investigative processes and procedures are ongoing.

The situation has sparked concerns about the politicization of corruption allegations and the use of state institutions to silence opposition voices. As the case unfolds, the public will be watching closely to see how the constitutional timelines and procedural requirements are navigated.
