The Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) has denied reports that Manhyia South Member of Parliament, Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, was granted GH¢50 million bail. According to EOCO, the MP voluntarily surrendered to the agency on Thursday, October 1, and was subsequently placed under arrest as investigators continued with the necessary processes. EOCO stated that it is working with the Office of the Attorney-General to bring Baffour Awuah before a weekend court, following constitutional timeframes and procedural requirements governing bail.

EOCO said Baffour Awuah was cooperating with the Office as the investigative process continued. The agency also urged the public to disregard reports of the GH¢50 million bail, stating that investigations and other procedural processes involving the MP remained ongoing. This development follows heightened attention surrounding the investigation involving Baffour Awuah and his earlier interactions with EOCO.

Meanwhile, Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has questioned EOCO's decision to search the residence of Baffour Awuah, claiming that the court order obtained by the agency specifically authorised a search of his law firm. Afenyo-Markin said the issue arose on Friday, October 2, after EOCO informed the detained MP that investigators intended to search his residence.

Afenyo-Markin stated that the court order procured by EOCO was clear that they should only search Baffour Awuah's office, his law firm at Dzorwulu. He further said the court had directed that the order be served on the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin. His comments come amid the ongoing investigation involving the Manhyia South MP, with EOCO continuing its investigative and procedural processes.

EOCO has maintained that the matter remains under investigation and that the appropriate legal and constitutional procedures will be followed. The agency is working to conclude its investigations and take the necessary actions in accordance with the law. Baffour Awuah's case has garnered significant attention, with many stakeholders following the developments closely.

The investigation involving Baffour Awuah is one of several high-profile cases that EOCO has been handling in recent times. The agency has been working to tackle organised crime and corruption in Ghana, and the case has been seen as a test of its capabilities. EOCO's efforts to bring Baffour Awuah to court will be closely watched by the public and other stakeholders.

The case has also raised questions about the role of Parliament in overseeing the activities of its members, particularly in cases where they are accused of wrongdoing. Some have called for greater transparency and accountability in the handling of such cases, while others have expressed concerns about the potential for political interference.
