A five-day training program took place from October 19 to 23, targeting 28 communal officials from various regions in Cameroon, including Littoral, West, South-West, North-West, and East. The program aimed to equip these officials with knowledge on environmental standards and control measures for livestock products sold in markets. This initiative was part of the Project for the Development of Livestock and Fisheries Value Chains.
The training, conducted by Yves Bassoum, an animal production engineer, covered national and international standards governing livestock farming. Participants gained insights into environmental and health norms applicable to the commercialization of livestock products. The program also focused on enhancing operational capacities in hygiene and sanitation, including techniques for controlling and preserving meat products and managing waste.
The training program was organized by the Special Fund for Equipment and Intercommunal Intervention (FEICOM), which aims to support the development of decentralized territorial councils (CTDs). The primary goal was to strengthen the technical capacities of communal officials in enforcing environmental standards and controlling livestock products to ensure consumer safety and improve the sanitary quality of food sold in markets.
Key areas of focus during the training included mastering environmental and health standards for livestock product commercialization and enhancing operational capacities in hygiene and sanitation. Officials learned techniques for controlling and conserving meat products, improving waste management, and protecting the environment. These skills are expected to contribute to better regulation and monitoring of livestock products in local markets.
The initiative reflects a broader effort to enhance food safety and environmental protection in Cameroon. By empowering communal officials with the necessary knowledge and skills, the program aims to have a positive impact on public health and the quality of livestock products available to consumers. The training is a step towards achieving these objectives.
The project aligns with FEICOM’s mandate to support the development of CTDs. By investing in the capacity building of communal officials, FEICOM seeks to promote sustainable development and improve service delivery at the local level. The training program is a testament to the organization’s commitment to enhancing local governance and community well-being.
Overall, the training program has equipped communal officials with critical knowledge and skills to regulate and monitor livestock products effectively. This development is expected to contribute to improved food safety, environmental protection, and public health outcomes in Cameroon. The impact of the program will be closely watched by stakeholders.
