Dr. Christopher Ndubuisi Okonkwo, the National Rescue Movement (NRM) governorship candidate in Enugu State, has strongly condemned the reported attacks on supporters of another governorship candidate, Christian Chinyeaka Ohaa, of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC). The incident occurred at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu State on Saturday, October 10, 2026. According to Okonkwo, armed thugs allegedly loyal to the ruling party carried out the attacks.

Okonkwo described the incident as disturbing and called on the state government and relevant security agencies to investigate the attacks and ensure that anyone found culpable is brought to justice. He expressed sympathy with those affected, particularly those who sustained injuries, and extended his sincere sympathy to their families and loved ones. The NRM candidate emphasized that political differences should not prevent citizens from exercising their democratic rights.

The NRM candidate stressed that violence and intimidation have no place in the electoral process. He stated that no political disagreement, ambition, or contest for public office can justify the shedding of innocent blood. Okonkwo emphasized that democracy must never become a license for violence and that citizens must be able to participate in the democratic process without fear.

Okonkwo specifically called on Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah to condemn and investigate the repeated attacks aimed at suppressing political campaigns in the state. He demanded that the governor take action to address the issue and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice. The NRM candidate warned that opposition parties should not be pushed into taking matters into their own hands.

The NRM candidate outlined his security priorities, stating that protecting human life would be central to his administration if elected governor of Enugu State. He pledged to take decisive and practical measures to address insecurity, ensuring that residents and visitors can move around the state safely. Okonkwo emphasized that security would not be treated as a political slogan but as a solemn responsibility.

Okonkwo urged political parties and their supporters across Enugu State to remain peaceful and law-abiding, warning that political disagreements must not lead to the loss of human lives. He reiterated his call for peace and improved security in the state, stating that Enugu deserves peace and security, and that every life in Enugu deserves protection.

The incident has raised concerns about the level of violence and intimidation in the electoral process in Enugu State. Okonkwo's condemnation of the attacks and his call for Governor Mbah's intervention have highlighted the need for the state government to take action to address the issue. The state government and security agencies have not yet responded to the incident.
