The Enugu government has established development centres across all 17 local government areas (LGAs) in the state. This move aims to increase grassroots participation in governance and improve community engagement. The Secretary to the State Government, Chidiebere Onyia, confirmed the development in a statement on October 7, 2026. He stated that Governor Peter Mbah approved the appointments to fill existing vacancies in the various development centres.

According to Onyia, the development centres will provide communities with effective channels to contribute to government programmes and policies. This initiative seeks to deepen the government's reach at the local level and promote inclusivity and broad-based representation. The centres will enable communities to participate meaningfully in the administration's development agenda.

The newly constituted development centres cover several LGAs, including Aninri, Awgu, Enugu East, Enugu North, Enugu South, Ezeagu, Igbo Etiti, Igbo-Eze North, Igbo-Eze South, Isi-Uzo, and Nkanu East. Each development centre comprises an administrator, secretary, and members drawn from communities within the respective areas.

In some LGAs, multiple development centres were constituted. For instance, in Aninri LGA, the government set up the Aninri East, Aninri North, Aninri South, and Aninri West development centres. Similarly, four development centres were established in each of Enugu North, Enugu South, Ezeagu, Igbo Etiti, Igbo-Eze North, and Igbo-Eze South LGAs.

The appointments to these development centres reflect the government's objective of broad-based grassroots representation. People from various communities, wards, and development areas were selected to ensure inclusivity. Onyia urged the appointees to contribute to the effective coordination of development activities and strengthen the link between communities and government.

The development centres are expected to facilitate greater community engagement and responsiveness. They will enable the government to reach out to communities more effectively and ensure that their needs are addressed. This initiative is part of the government's efforts to promote good governance and community development.

With the establishment of these development centres, the Enugu government is taking steps to ensure that its programmes and policies are responsive to the needs of communities. The centres will serve as a platform for communities to participate in decision-making and contribute to the development of their areas.
