The Governor of Enugu State, Dr. Peter Mbah, has officially launched the first international service by Enugu Air, marking a significant milestone in the state's quest to become a major aviation hub. The maiden flight, which departed from the Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu, safely landed at the Douala International Airport in Cameroon. This achievement is part of Mbah's administration's vision to grow Enugu State into a $30 billion economy.
During the flag-off ceremony, Mbah commended the leadership of Enugu Air for the rapid growth of the state-owned airline, obtaining an Air Operator's License within six months of its establishment. He emphasized that Enugu Air is not just a symbol of achievement but a crucial part of the state's strategy to become a premier destination for investment, business, tourism, and living. The governor expressed his gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for his support for aviation infrastructure development and the Minister of Aviation and Aerodrome Development, Festus Keyama, for his role in enabling Enugu Air's growth.
Enugu Air's CEO, Capt. Tolu Ita, described the launch of the international flight as a new chapter for the airline and the state. She stated that Enugu Air aims to connect people, markets, and possibilities, with plans to expand its regional network across Africa and eventually to wider international markets. Ita reaffirmed the airline's commitment to upholding the highest operational and ethical standards, ensuring a safe and reliable travel experience for passengers.
The Managing Director/CEO of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Mrs. Olubunmi Onabanjo-Kuku, congratulated Enugu Air on its fast growth and described the inaugural international flight as a strong statement of Nigeria's growing capacity to connect people and businesses across West and Central Africa. She assured that FAAN remains committed to providing the necessary infrastructure, safety standards, and support for Enugu Air's continued success.
The Director General of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), represented by Director of Air Transport Regulations, Mrs. Olayinka Babaoye-Iruobe, noted that the direct connection between Enugu and Douala would create opportunities for increased trade, investment, tourism, and movement of people, strengthening social and economic ties between Nigeria and Cameroon. This development is expected to have a positive impact on the regional economy.
The Commissioner for Trade, Investment, and Industry, Dr. Sam Ogbu-Nwobodo, welcomed the new service, describing it as a monumental leap forward in the state's trade, investment, and economic integration strategy.
