Dutch energy firm Energy Ventures BV has initiated a project to convert approximately five million standard cubic feet of flared gas per day into electricity and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) in Rivers State, Nigeria. The company aims to transform environmental waste into sustainable energy. This project is a significant step towards reducing gas flaring in the country. Energy Ventures BV, through its subsidiary Africa Gas Technology Company Limited, is developing the project in collaboration with key partners.
The Chief Executive Officer of Energy Ventures BV, Herbert Okibe, recently visited the project site and met with key partners, including the management of Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company (PHED). During the visit, Okibe disclosed that the project would harness flare gas from HES Energy and convert it into electricity and cooking gas for communities around the project area. The goal is to provide sustainable energy to customers who have been underserved in these areas.
According to Okibe, the project will only utilize a fraction of the gas being wasted through flaring across Nigeria. Nigeria is the seventh-highest gas flaring country globally. Okibe noted that if all the gas flared globally were harnessed, it would be sufficient to power the whole of Africa. The Rivers project is seen as a pilot that could demonstrate the technical and economic viability of converting flare gas into useful energy.
The project has received support from the Dutch and Nigerian governments, and regulatory approvals have also advanced. PHED has given the company the green light to engage the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) for the necessary electricity-generation permit. This permit is crucial for the project's implementation.
The project is expected to require tens of millions of dollars in investment, with funding anticipated from both private and public sources. The Dutch government and Nigeria's Midstream and Downstream Gas Infrastructure Fund (MDGIF) are expected to contribute to the funding. The investment will help create a sustainable energy project that benefits the local communities.
Okibe emphasized that gas flaring has caused significant environmental pollution and health issues, including air pollution and respiratory illnesses. He described the project as a small step towards correcting the harm caused by years of gas flaring. The project aims to provide a cleaner and more sustainable source of energy for the communities.
The successful implementation of this project could pave the way for similar initiatives in Nigeria and other countries that experience significant gas flaring.
