Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi met with Sudan's Transitional Sovereign Council Chairman General Abdel-Fattah Al-Burhan in New Alamein on Sunday, 4 October 2026. The meeting took place on the sidelines of the African Union's eighth Mid-Year Coordination Meeting. According to Presidential Spokesman Ambassador Mohamed El-Shennawy, the two leaders discussed developments in Sudan and Egypt's commitment to preserving the country's unity, sovereignty, territorial integrity, and national state institutions.

President El-Sisi stressed Egypt's support for the Sudanese people and its commitment to advancing a political solution to end the war and alleviate humanitarian suffering. Egypt aims to enable Sudan to restore security and stability, move toward reconstruction and development, and make every effort at the regional and international levels to achieve this goal. These efforts reflect Egypt's distinctive historical and fraternal relations with Sudan.

General Al-Burhan expressed deep appreciation for Egypt's positions, praising its political and humanitarian support, as well as its hosting of large numbers of Sudanese forced to leave their country due to the war. Al-Burhan also stressed that Sudan's legitimate state institutions should not be equated with rebel militias or parallel entities, praising Egypt's clear and consistent position on this issue.

The leaders also discussed strengthening bilateral relations, with President El-Sisi affirming Egypt's commitment to supporting Sudan across various fields and expanding cooperation to serve both countries' interests and their peoples' aspirations for development and prosperity. Egypt has previously expressed readiness to support Sudan's reconstruction once fighting ends and security is restored.

The meeting follows Egyptian-US consultations on Sudan on 30 September, when Cairo reiterated support for the country's unity and legitimate institutions. On 20 September, Egyptian, Sudanese, and US officials held talks in New York on ending the war. Earlier in September, Egypt and China called for a ceasefire and a Sudanese-owned political process.

The discussions between El-Sisi and Al-Burhan also touched on the importance of respecting international law on transboundary rivers. This stance is shared by Eritrea and Somalia, highlighting a broader regional consensus on the issue. The leaders' emphasis on Sudan's unity and legitimate institutions reflects a unified position among key regional players.

The talks between President El-Sisi and General Al-Burhan demonstrate Egypt's ongoing commitment to supporting Sudan during its current challenges. By reaffirming its stance on Sudan's unity and a political solution to the war, Egypt continues to play a key role in regional efforts to address the crisis.
