Egyptian financial regulators are playing a crucial role in supporting the growth of startups and facilitating their access to capital markets. According to Kareema El-Hakim, Regional Director and Executive Partner at Plug and Play, the Egyptian Financial Regulatory Authority and the Egyptian Stock Exchange have been instrumental in creating a more favorable environment for startups to access capital markets. El-Hakim emphasized that the initial public offering (IPO) is not the only exit strategy for startups, and that building multiple options for growth companies is essential.

El-Hakim highlighted the importance of early dialogue between startups, investors, and regulators to discuss governance, disclosure, and profitability. She noted that Plug and Play's role goes beyond just investing in startups, but also involves helping them access the right networks and connect with suitable investors and institutions. El-Hakim also mentioned that two Egyptian companies in which Plug and Play has invested have reached advanced stages of growth.

The role of investors in supporting startups goes beyond just providing funding. El-Hakim emphasized that investors should help startups access the right networks and connect with suitable investors and institutions. She also noted that Plug and Play's goal is not to limit opportunities to companies in its investment portfolio, but to make these opportunities available to Egyptian founders who have reached a stage where they can engage in these discussions.

Plug and Play is participating in the AT50 initiative, which aims to support the growth of startups in Egypt. El-Hakim explained that the company is working to ensure that the right founders are in the right dialogue, and that the discussion is not limited to founders and venture capital funds, but also includes institutional investors and capital markets. The initiative has brought together Egyptian tech startup founders, local and international investors, and financial institutions.

The AT50 initiative has provided a platform for startups to share their experiences and learn from others. El-Hakim mentioned that the event included a presentation by Valuo, a company that has gone through the IPO process. She emphasized that the goal of this initiative is to create real choices for companies, rather than directing them towards a specific exit strategy.

El-Hakim is also a member of the Governance Council of Indexa Group, representing the venture capital side. She explained that the council is responsible for providing governance and oversight on the methodology and decisions related to the inclusion or exclusion of companies from the index. El-Hakim emphasized that Plug and Play's investment in some companies does not influence the selection of companies for the index.

El-Hakim praised the Egyptian Financial Regulatory Authority and the Egyptian Stock Exchange for their efforts in supporting entrepreneurship and facilitating access to capital markets. She specifically highlighted the regulatory sandbox as a tool that helps provide a regulated environment for testing and developing innovative financial solutions. El-Hakim also noted that Plug and Play's role in the ecosystem extends from investing in and supporting companies in growth stages to opening up its networks to founders and providing access to investors and markets.
