Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi concluded a visit to Malaysia, marking a significant boost to bilateral relations. The visit, El-Sisi's first to Malaysia since taking office in 2014, included meetings with Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and King Sultan Ibrahim. The two leaders emphasized the importance of enhancing cooperation in various fields, particularly in the economy, trade, investment, and politics.
During his meeting with King Sultan Ibrahim at the Istana Negara, the Egyptian President highlighted the need to develop the Egyptian-Malaysian partnership, especially in economic, trade, and investment sectors. The King awarded El-Sisi the Darjah Utama Seri Mahkota Negara, Malaysia's highest federal honor, reflecting the Malaysian leadership's appreciation for relations with Egypt.
El-Sisi and Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim held bilateral talks, followed by expanded discussions with the participation of delegates from both countries. The leaders focused on maximizing the use of their countries' economic potential, increasing trade and investment cooperation, and exploring new opportunities for their companies and investors.
The visit resulted in the signing of four memoranda of understanding between Egypt and Malaysia in the fields of women's empowerment, higher education, tourism, and investment. These agreements reflect the diversity of the Egyptian-Malaysian cooperation agenda, ranging from human capacity development and educational exchange to tourism promotion and new investment opportunities.
The two countries agreed to refer the agreed-upon matters to the Egyptian-Malaysian Joint Committee, scheduled to meet in the first quarter of 2027. This committee will follow up on cooperation files and push them towards implementation, providing a institutional framework for monitoring and exploring new opportunities.
El-Sisi and Ibrahim also discussed enhancing cultural, scientific, and religious cooperation, with the Egyptian President emphasizing the Azhar's role in promoting moderation. The leaders exchanged views on regional and international developments, stressing the importance of de-escalation and diplomatic solutions to crises, supporting peace, stability, and development.
The Egyptian President reiterated the need for a fair and comprehensive solution to the Palestinian issue, ensuring the Palestinian people's right to an independent state.
