Egyptian Planning Minister, Ahmed Rustom, recently held a high-level meeting with World Bank officials and representatives from several international financial and development institutions. The meeting aimed to review the progress and final steps towards launching the Infrastructure Financing Guarantee Facility (IFGF) in Egypt. This mechanism is considered a pioneering model for innovative financing and attracting private sector investments.

The meeting was attended by representatives from various international and regional institutions, including the African Development Bank, European Investment Bank, European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank, Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), British International Investment (BII), French Development Agency, World Bank Group (WBG), International Finance Corporation (IFC), German Development Bank, and the Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs. Minister Rustom emphasized that the IFGF is being developed in collaboration with the World Bank, in line with presidential directives and comprehensive national efforts for structural economic reform.

The primary goal of the IFGF is to create an innovative framework for long-term financing, reducing the pressure on the state's general budget. Minister Rustom highlighted that the mechanism seeks to find long-term financing solutions in local currency, reducing investment risks and directly contributing to lowering the burden on the state's budget and improving public spending efficiency. The Ministry is working closely with the World Bank and national authorities to ensure the rapid activation of the IFGF.

The focus of the IFGF will be on vital economic and service sectors, particularly renewable energy, water treatment and desalination plants, and modern transportation projects. These initiatives align with Egypt's Vision 2030 and aim to support growth and employment rates. World Bank officials presented a detailed overview of the project's progress, launch phases, and timeline for the actual implementation of the IFGF.

Representatives from international financial and development institutions expressed their strong interest and readiness to join the new mechanism, contributing necessary guarantees and financing solutions for its success. The World Bank team emphasized that the IFGF reflects the growing strategic partnership with the Egyptian government, reiterating their commitment to sharing international expertise to minimize financing risks and provide technical and advisory support.

The IFGF is expected to play a crucial role in promoting private sector participation in Egypt's infrastructure development. By providing innovative financing solutions and guarantees, the mechanism aims to attract significant investments from major private sector companies. This, in turn, will contribute to achieving Egypt's development goals and improving the country's infrastructure.

Key aspects of the IFGF include its focus on long-term financing in local currency, reduction of investment risks, and enhancement of public spending efficiency. The mechanism is also expected to support Egypt's economic growth and development, as outlined in the country's Vision 2030.
