Egyptian Member of Parliament Talat Al-Suwidi has submitted a parliamentary question to Prime Minister and Ministers of Industry, Petroleum, and Mineral Wealth regarding a strategy to maximize the value added of Egypt's mineral wealth. Al-Suwidi emphasized the need to move beyond extracting and exporting raw materials in their initial form. He called for a comprehensive vision to transform mineral wealth into an industrial and productive base capable of generating added value, investment opportunities, jobs, and increasing state export earnings.
Al-Suwidi highlighted that Egypt's possession of diverse mineral ores and wealth should serve as a foundation for establishing related manufacturing industries. This would enable the country to transition from merely extracting raw materials to processing and producing a final product for export. This approach would multiply the economic return compared to exporting raw materials without processing. He requested legislative and investment incentives for projects focused on locally manufacturing raw materials.
The MP inquired about the government's investment map for mineral ores, including determining each ore's reserves and identifying the best industries to establish and target markets for final products. He asked about the possibility of linking exploitation licenses for certain ores with gradual plans for local manufacturing. Al-Suwidi also questioned the government's plans to establish specialized industrial zones near mineral wealth sites to reduce transportation costs and encourage the establishment of conversion factories.
Al-Suwidi stressed that maximizing the value added of mineral wealth would increase export earnings, reduce the export of low-value ores, deepen local manufacturing, attract new investments, create jobs, and develop mining areas. He emphasized the need for mineral wealth to become a driver of manufacturing and export, rather than just a source of raw materials. This approach would enable the Egyptian economy to compete in global markets.
The MP suggested launching a national program titled "Egyptian Ore... Egyptian Product... Egyptian Exports" to link the mining sector with engineering, chemical, construction materials, and technology industries. He requested information on proposed tax and financing incentives for investors transitioning from raw material extraction to producing high-value-added final products.
Al-Suwidi's question was addressed to Prime Minister and Ministers of Industry, Petroleum, and Mineral Wealth through the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Dr. Hanafy Abdel Wahed, and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Counselor Hisham Badawi. The question aims to shed light on the government's strategy for optimizing Egypt's mineral resources.
Maximizing the value of Egypt's mineral wealth has become a pressing concern, given the country's rich natural resources. The government's response to Al-Suwidi's question is expected to provide insight into its plans for harnessing these resources to drive economic growth and development.
