The Egyptian Parliament's Health Committee, led by Dr. Sherif Basha, recently discussed three requests for information submitted by MP Mohamed Zain El-Din regarding healthcare services in Edko, a city in the Beheira governorate. The requests concerned the establishment of a cardiac catheterization unit at Edko Central Hospital, the absence of an MRI machine at the hospital, and the perceived decline in healthcare services provided by the national health insurance scheme in Edko.

MP Mohamed Zain El-Din emphasized the importance of providing adequate healthcare services to citizens, noting that Edko Central Hospital serves a large population of approximately 1.1 million people. He stressed the need for the hospital to be equipped with a cardiac catheterization unit and an MRI machine, offering to provide a suitable location for the equipment within the hospital. According to Zain El-Din, committees from the Ministry of Health had already inspected the site for the installation of the medical equipment.

In response to the requests, Dr. Peter Wajih, Assistant Minister of Health for Therapeutic Medicine, stated that an MRI machine had been installed at Rashid Center, which is about 15 minutes away from Edko. He also mentioned that arrangements were being made to install a cardiac catheterization unit at Edko Central Hospital. Dr. Wajih announced plans to upgrade Edko Hospital, which has been in operation for around 90 years, and indicated that the hospital's upgrade would be considered once a decision was made on the allocation of land for a new hospital.

Dr. Sherif Basha, Chair of the Health Committee, emphasized the importance of considering the geographical distribution of large medical equipment. He stated that the primary concern was the health and well-being of Egyptian citizens, with the goal of achieving universal healthcare coverage. Basha's comments were made in response to concerns about the availability of medical equipment and services in Edko and other areas.

The Health Committee also discussed the condition of the health insurance clinic in Edko, which MP Zain El-Din described as dilapidated and in need of renovation. He also noted that the clinic was understaffed and unable to accommodate the number of patients visiting the facility. Zain El-Din requested that the clinic be provided with specialist doctors and that medications be dispensed on-site, rather than requiring patients to visit other clinics.

A representative of the Health Insurance Authority announced that arrangements would be made to contract with pharmacies to provide medications to patients at the Edko clinic. The representative also noted that pharmacies would be selected based on specific criteria. In response to concerns about the shortage of specialist doctors at the clinic, Dr. Basha recommended that health insurance clinics be located within existing hospitals across the country.

The discussions by the Health Committee reflect ongoing efforts to improve healthcare services in Egypt, particularly in underserved areas such as Edko. The Committee's recommendations and the Ministry of Health's plans aim to address the concerns raised by MP Zain El-Din and improve the overall quality of healthcare services provided to citizens.
