The Egyptian Ministry of Social Solidarity recently highlighted its efforts to develop a comprehensive care system for the elderly, aiming to provide protection, care, and promote independence and social participation. This comes on the occasion of World Seniors Day, observed annually on October 1st. The ministry's approach goes beyond meeting basic needs, extending to health, psychological, and social aspects.
The care system for seniors includes home care and family support, enabling them to live in their familiar environment. It also provides health, social, and psychological care in coordination with relevant authorities and civil society institutions. The ministry supports specialized medical convoys in collaboration with government agencies and civil society organizations to offer medical services, especially for those in care homes.
In a collaborative effort, the Ministry of Interior has decided to open police hospitals for free medical examination of seniors in care homes under the Ministry of Social Solidarity. This initiative will run throughout October, with seniors receiving medical care on Fridays at designated police hospitals in various locations.
The Ministry of Social Solidarity is working with the Ministry of Health and Population to conduct field visits to care homes, providing early detection services for diseases and health issues common among seniors. These visits leverage services from the President's healthcare initiative for seniors, as well as programs for early detection of chronic diseases and kidney disease.
The ministry prioritizes protecting seniors from violence, neglect, and exploitation by receiving and processing complaints, taking necessary actions, and promoting family support for elderly care. It also focuses on institutional care, monitoring care homes to ensure a safe, healthy, and humane environment that preserves dignity and meets needs.
As of now, there are 201 licensed care homes, accommodating around 4468 seniors. The ministry's efforts also include supporting care homes, senior clubs, and service complexes, as well as covering transportation costs for seniors. A fund for elderly care was established under Law 19 of 2024, providing a support mechanism for social protection services.
The Ministry of Social Solidarity emphasizes that its vision for elderly care goes beyond basic services to empowerment and social participation, ensuring a dignified and secure life for seniors. The ministry calls for integrated efforts from families, civil society, and government agencies to provide a supportive environment that respects, protects, and empowers seniors.
