Egyptian Minister of Planning and Economic Development, Dr. Ahmed Rustom, and Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, Engineer Karim Badawi, recently convened a meeting to review the performance of the petroleum sector. He noted a significant improvement in sector performance, citing a 22.4% growth in petroleum refining during the third quarter of the 2025/2026 fiscal year. The sector also saw an 8.7% growth rate for the entire fiscal year. Rustom praised efforts to enhance investment in the sector and repay debts to foreign partners, which has helped restore investor confidence.
Engineer Karim Badawi stated that the petroleum sector is on a positive growth trajectory, overcoming previous challenges. He attributed this progress to the repayment of debts to foreign partners, which has enabled increased investments in exploration and production. Badawi emphasized that boosting domestic oil and gas production remains a top priority, through field development and intensified exploration efforts. This aims to meet citizen needs, support state sectors, and reduce imports.
The ministers also discussed service development, particularly expanding natural gas connections to homes, replacing traditional butane cylinders. This initiative aims to provide a more convenient and cost-effective service, enhancing quality of life. Additionally, efforts to convert vehicles to run on gas and expand fueling stations were highlighted as key strategies to ease service delivery and reduce fuel costs for vehicle owners.
The meeting also touched on diversifying energy sources, with the Petroleum Ministry coordinating with the Electricity Ministry to implement the state's strategy for increasing renewable energy contributions to electricity generation. This aims to decrease natural gas usage and reduce import costs. Furthermore, projects to connect Cypriot gas fields to Egypt's infrastructure are underway, solidifying Egypt's role as a regional energy hub.
The ministers reviewed growth rates in natural gas and petroleum sectors, which are showing positive trends. The expansion of service stations and fueling points was also discussed, with numbers increasing from 2,900 in 2014 to 4,107 by the end of the 2025/2026 fiscal year.
