Egyptian Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation, Hani Suwelim, recently met with Gonzalo Correa, Deputy Head of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) for Infrastructure in Egypt and Regional Head of Sustainable Infrastructure. The meeting aimed to enhance cooperation between the two parties and review the status of several joint projects. These projects include the rehabilitation of the Kitchener Drain and pumping stations in Egypt, as well as the rehabilitation of the Rashid seawall.

Minister Suwelim emphasized the ministry's commitment to continued coordination with the EBRD in areas such as coastal protection and water infrastructure development. This collaboration is expected to maximize the utilization of available financing opportunities and support project implementation based on technical studies and Egyptian government priorities.

The minister highlighted the importance of ongoing technical studies to determine priorities for coastal protection projects, their implementation sites, and financing mechanisms. These studies ensure that decisions are based on clear technical, economic, and environmental foundations, taking into account national priorities and standard procedures.

The meeting also covered the status of the Kitchener Drain water quality improvement project. Specifically, discussions focused on procedures for tendering the construction of Samata and Hamoul pumping stations, as well as the contracting of technical support and supervision services for the project. Minister Suwelim stressed the need to overcome project obstacles, accelerate implementation rates, and adhere to scheduled timelines.

Both parties reviewed the strategic plan for rehabilitating pumping stations in Egypt, prepared by the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation. They also discussed the progress of preparing a feasibility study on private sector participation in constructing and rehabilitating pumping stations, a project carried out in cooperation with the EBRD. The ministry continues to review the study's initial report and gather necessary data for its completion.

The Egyptian Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation is working closely with the EBRD to advance several water infrastructure projects. These efforts aim to improve the efficiency and sustainability of Egypt's water resources management. By collaborating with international financial institutions like the EBRD, Egypt seeks to leverage technical expertise and financing to support its development goals.

The meeting between Minister Suwelim and EBRD official Correa reflects the ongoing cooperation between Egypt and the EBRD in the water sector. This cooperation is crucial for addressing Egypt's water infrastructure challenges and promoting sustainable development.
