Egyptian Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy, Dr. Mahmoud Essam, recently reviewed the main projects and files being worked on by the ministry. These include the peaceful nuclear program, expansion of new and renewable energy projects, and electrical interconnection with neighboring countries. The review took place during a seminar organized by the National Press Authority, headed by Engineer Abdel Sadek El-Shorbagi.
Dr. Essam emphasized that Egypt's electricity and energy sector has witnessed an unprecedented boom from 2014 to 2026. The ministry continues to work on strategic projects aimed at diversifying production sources, achieving sustainability, and meeting the increasing needs of all developmental plans across the country. The minister highlighted that the sector is working to enhance its capabilities and infrastructure.
The minister pointed out that the El-Dabaa nuclear power plant is a major national project being implemented to support the energy sector as part of Egypt's peaceful nuclear program. This project plays a pivotal role in diversifying the energy mix and reducing dependence on traditional fuel. The project is expected to have a significant impact on the country's energy landscape.
Dr. Essam also stressed the importance of electrical interconnection projects as a cornerstone for supporting the power system. He mentioned that work is ongoing on interconnection files with Saudi Arabia, Greece, and Italy. These projects aim to establish Egypt as a regional and international hub for energy exchange, leveraging its unique geographical location.
The minister highlighted that localizing the industry of electrical and renewable energy components is a top priority. This aims to support local industry and meet the needs of ongoing projects while securing the necessary power supply for the state's plans to expand agricultural reclamation and develop the national grid's capacity to absorb new loads.
Dr. Essam reviewed the efforts of distribution companies to reduce technical and commercial losses and develop the metering system. He disclosed the procedures taken in the file of code meters from July 1, 2024, to August 31, 2026, to regulate consumption. The implementation of these measures is expected to improve the efficiency of the power sector.
The minister concluded that the energy strategy until 2040 focuses on the gradual transformation of the national grid into a smart grid. This grid will be capable of efficiently absorbing renewable energies with higher efficiency and less loss. The goal is to ensure the stability and continuity of electricity supply to all citizens.
